12V Electrical Accessories FAQs

What is an Anderson plug?

An Anderson plug is a heavy duty connector used for high current 12V connections, such as fridges, dual battery systems and trailer charging. It's quick to connect and disconnect and won't vibrate loose.

Can I run a fridge from a cigarette lighter socket?

Many fridges can, but cigarette sockets can work loose and their wiring is often thin. For regular use, a dedicated socket wired with heavier cable, or an Anderson plug, gives a more reliable connection.

What size cable do I need for 12V accessories?

It depends on the current draw and the length of the run. Longer runs and higher currents need thicker cable to avoid voltage drop. Check the accessory's instructions or a 12V cable size chart.

What 12V accessories are most useful for touring?

Common picks include extra 12V and USB outlets, Anderson plugs, a battery monitor, an inverter for small 240V devices, and good lighting. Choose what matches the gear you run.

Do 12V accessories drain my battery?

They can if they're left on with the engine off. A dual battery system, a low voltage cut off or a battery monitor helps protect your starting battery.
