About Brake Shoes

Brake shoes do the same job in a drum brake that pads do in a disc brake. They're common on the rear of utes and 4WDs, and many vehicles with rear discs also use small shoes inside the rotor for the park brake.

Brake Shoes FAQs

Are brake pads and brake shoes the same?

No. Brake pads work with disc brakes and clamp onto a rotor. Brake shoes work with drum brakes and press outward against the inside of a drum. Your vehicle may have pads at the front and shoes at the rear.

Do I need to replace brake drums or just the shoes?

Often just the shoes. If the drums are within their maximum diameter and aren't scored or out of round, they can be reused. Measure the drums or have them checked when replacing shoes.

How long do brake shoes last?

Brake shoes commonly last longer than front pads, but it depends on the vehicle, the load and how the handbrake is used. Check them at regular services, especially if you tow.

Do brake shoes need adjusting after fitting?

Usually, yes. New shoes are adjusted so they sit close to the drum without dragging. Self adjusting systems still need an initial setting. Check the handbrake adjustment afterwards.

Should I replace the springs and hardware with new shoes?

It's good practice. Springs and clips lose tension over time and can cause noise or uneven wear. A drum brake hardware kit is an easy way to refresh them while the brakes are apart.
