About Belts & Timing

Belts drive your engine's accessories and keep the timing in sync, so they're a part you don't want to let go too long. This range includes drive belts, V-belts, timing belts, timing belt and timing chain kits, belt tensioners, idler pulleys and harmonic balancers from brands including Dayco.

Select your vehicle at the top of the page to see parts that fit. When replacing a timing belt, a kit with the tensioner and idlers is the best way to replace the wear parts together. Check your service schedule for the right interval, or call us on 02 9413 3166.

Belts & Timing FAQs

How often should a timing belt be changed?

Follow your vehicle's service schedule, which sets the interval in kilometres or years, whichever comes first. Intervals vary widely between engines, so check the schedule or give us a call with your make, model and engine.

What's the difference between a timing belt and a timing chain?

A timing belt is made of reinforced rubber and is replaced at set intervals. A timing chain is metal and runs in engine oil, and is usually designed to last much longer, though its guides and tensioners can wear. Your engine uses one or the other.

What happens if a timing belt breaks?

The engine stops immediately. On many engines, called interference engines, the valves and pistons can then collide, causing serious engine damage. That's why replacing the belt on schedule matters.

What else should be replaced with a timing belt?

Many timing belt kits include the tensioner and idler pulleys. If the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it's often replaced at the same time too, since the labour overlaps.

Why is my drive belt squealing?

Squeal usually comes from a worn or glazed belt, low belt tension, a worn tensioner, a misaligned pulley, or contamination such as oil or coolant on the belt. Check the belt, tensioner and pulleys.
