Workshop Tools Misc FAQs

Do I need a torque wrench?

Yes, for any job where bolts have a specified torque, such as wheel nuts, brake calipers, suspension and engine parts. Over or under tightening can cause parts to fail or come loose.

How do I use a torque wrench?

Set the wrench to the specified torque, fit the socket, and pull smoothly on the handle until it clicks or indicates the set torque. Don't keep pulling after the click. Store click type wrenches at their lowest setting.

What size torque wrench do I need?

Choose one whose range covers the torques you work with most, ideally in the middle of its range. Many home mechanics use a smaller wrench for engine work and a larger one for wheels and suspension.

How often should a torque wrench be calibrated?

Follow the maker's guidance. Many recommend checking calibration about yearly, or sooner if it's been dropped or used heavily.

What specialty tools are worth having?

Commonly useful specialty tools include a brake caliper piston tool, a ball joint separator, a flare nut spanner, a bearing puller and a multimeter. Buy them as jobs come up.
