TOOLS FAQs

What tools do I need to start working on my own car?

A good starter kit includes a socket set, spanners, screwdrivers, pliers, a torque wrench, a jack and axle stands, and a multimeter. Add specialist tools as you take on bigger jobs.

Are cheap tools worth it?

For occasional use, budget tools can do the job. For tools you use often or that handle high loads, such as sockets, torque wrenches and jacks, quality tools last longer and are safer.

Do I need metric or imperial tools?

Most modern cars use metric fasteners. Older vehicles, some American vehicles and some classics use imperial sizes, so check your vehicle before buying.

What safety gear do I need for working on cars?

At a minimum, use axle stands, never just a jack, plus safety glasses and gloves. Wheel chocks and hearing protection are also worth having.

How do I find the right tool for a job?

Check your workshop manual for any special tools listed, then check the listing details for size and fitment. Give us a call on 02 9413 3166 if you're not sure.
