For many tourers, yes. A rooftop tent sets up quickly, keeps you off the ground, and leaves more space inside the vehicle. They're best suited to people who move camp often. The trade off is extra weight on the roof and having to pack up before driving anywhere.
Roof racks and vehicle roofs have a dynamic load rating for driving and a higher static rating when parked. The tent's weight must sit within the dynamic rating of both the rack and the roof. Check your vehicle and rack manufacturer's ratings.
Many rooftop tents set up in a few minutes. Hard shell tents are often the quickest. Check the listing for each tent's setup details.
Most vehicles with suitable roof racks or a canopy can carry a rooftop tent, as long as the load ratings are high enough. Check the tent's weight and mounting requirements on the listing.
It's not essential, but an awning adds shade and rain cover for cooking and relaxing at camp. Some awnings and annexes are designed to work with specific tents.
