How long does a car battery last?

Many car batteries last around three to five years, but heat, short trips, high electrical loads and deep discharges can shorten that. Australian summers are hard on batteries.

How do I test a car battery?

With the engine off and the battery rested, a multimeter reading of about 12.6V usually indicates a full charge. A lower reading suggests it needs charging. A load test or battery tester gives a better picture of its health.

What's the difference between AGM and lead acid batteries?

AGM batteries are a sealed type of lead acid battery that are spill proof, handle vibration well and recharge faster. Standard flooded lead acid batteries are cheaper but may need topping up and aren't suited to every position.

What battery charger do I need?

Choose a smart charger that suits your battery type, such as lead acid, AGM or lithium, and is sized for the battery's capacity. A multi stage charger can safely maintain a battery over long periods.

Is a jump starter worth carrying?

A portable jump starter lets you start a flat battery without another vehicle, which is useful for touring and remote travel. Choose one rated for your engine size, and keep it charged.
