Sockets and Drive Tools FAQs

What socket set should I buy?

For most home mechanics, a metric set in 1/4 and 3/8 inch drive covers most jobs, with 1/2 inch drive for larger bolts such as wheel nuts and suspension. Include deep sockets and extensions.

What's the difference between 6 point and 12 point sockets?

Six point sockets grip the flats of the bolt and are less likely to round it off, which suits tight or rusty fasteners. Twelve point sockets are easier to fit in tight spaces.

Can I use normal sockets on an impact wrench?

No. Use impact rated sockets with an impact wrench. Standard chrome sockets can crack or shatter under impact loads.

What drive size do I need?

1/4 inch drive suits small fasteners, 3/8 inch drive suits most general work, and 1/2 inch drive suits high torque jobs such as wheel nuts and suspension bolts.

Do I need deep sockets?

Deep sockets reach nuts on long studs or bolts, such as some suspension and exhaust fasteners. A set of each is useful.
