Couplings and Hitches FAQs

What size tow ball do I need?

Most trailers and caravans in Australia use a 50mm tow ball. The ball's rating must match or exceed your trailer's mass, and it must suit your tow bar and coupling.

What is tow ball weight?

Tow ball weight, or tow ball download, is the downward force the trailer puts on the tow ball. Many people aim for around 10% of the loaded trailer's weight, but stay within your vehicle's and tow bar's limits.

What does a weight distribution hitch do?

A weight distribution hitch spreads some of the tow ball weight across the tow vehicle's front and rear axles and the trailer. This helps level the vehicle and can improve steering and braking when towing heavy caravans. Check your vehicle maker allows one.

What type of trailer coupling do I need?

Standard 50mm ball couplings suit most trailers. Off road couplings suit trailers and campers that see rough tracks, as they allow more articulation. The coupling must be rated for your trailer's mass.

How do I know if my coupling is worn?

Look for excessive play or rattling when towing, a latch that doesn't lock firmly, cracks or damage to the coupling body, and wear on the ball itself. Replace worn couplings promptly.
