About Master Cylinders and Boosters

The master cylinder turns pedal pressure into hydraulic pressure, and the brake booster helps you apply it with less effort. If your pedal feels hard, sinks slowly or needs more push than it used to, one of these may be worn.

Our range includes brake master cylinders and power brake boosters. Select your vehicle at the top of the page to see parts that fit. If you're not sure which part is causing the problem, give us a call on 02 9413 3166.

Master Cylinders and Boosters FAQs

What are the signs of a failing brake master cylinder?

Common signs include a pedal that slowly sinks to the floor under steady pressure, a soft or spongy pedal, falling fluid levels, or fluid leaking near the master cylinder or onto the booster. Have it checked straight away.

Can a brake master cylinder fail without leaking?

Yes. The internal seals can wear and let fluid bypass inside the cylinder, so there's no visible leak. The usual sign is a pedal that slowly sinks while you hold steady pressure.

Can a brake master cylinder be repaired or rebuilt?

Some can be rebuilt with a seal kit if the bore is in good condition. Many are now replaced as a complete unit, which is often simpler and more reliable.

Are brake master cylinders universal?

No. Master cylinders are matched to the vehicle, including bore size, mounting, ports and reservoir. Select your vehicle at the top of the page or check the listing details, and give us a call if you're not sure.

What does a brake booster do?

The brake booster uses engine vacuum or a pump to multiply the force from your foot, so the brakes need less effort. A hard pedal, a hissing sound, or a change in idle when braking can mean the booster or its vacuum hose has a problem.
