About Rack Ends and Steering Racks

Rack ends, also called inner tie rods, connect the steering rack to the tie rod ends. Worn rack ends can cause play in the steering, knocking noises and uneven tyre wear.

Select your vehicle at the top of the page to see rack ends that fit. They're often replaced together with tie rod ends, followed by a wheel alignment. If you're not sure which part you need, call us on 02 9413 3166.

Rack Ends and Steering Racks FAQs

What is a rack end?

A rack end is the inner tie rod that screws into the end of the steering rack. It sits inside the rack boot and connects to the outer tie rod end, which attaches to the wheel.

What are the signs of a bad steering rack?

Common signs include power steering fluid leaks, a knocking or clunking felt through the wheel, heavy or uneven steering, a dead spot in the centre, or steering that doesn't return to centre properly.

Should I replace rack boots when they're torn?

Yes. A torn boot lets in dirt and water, which wears the rack ends and can damage the rack. Replacing a split boot early is a cheap way to protect the parts inside.

Can a steering rack be reconditioned?

Many steering racks can be reconditioned, and reconditioned or new replacement racks are also available. Check the listing for what's available for your vehicle, or give us a call.

Do I need a wheel alignment after replacing rack ends or a steering rack?

Yes. Any work on the steering rack or rack ends changes the toe setting, so an alignment is needed afterwards.
